MedImmune’s facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland, is now certified to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Superior Energy Performance™ (SEP) program and to ISO 50001. Superior Energy Performance™ is a DOE-administered certification program that provides guidance, tools, and protocols for facilities that want to achieve deeper, more sustained savings from ISO 50001. SEP also complements and supports the industrial part of DOE’s Better Buildings Initiative by verifying facility-level energy performance improvements and savings achieved by participants in the Better Buildings, Better Plants program.

To qualify for SEP, MedImmune set up a robust energy management system, tracked the improvements in its energy performance, and had the results independently verified by Advanced Waste Management Services, an accredited SEP Verification Body. Certification to the ISO 50001 standard for energy management systems is an integral part of the SEP certification process. The facility improved its energy performance by 8.5% over three years to achieve SEP certification at the Silver level. According to the DOE, the Gaithersburg facility saved an annual $247,000 in “low- to no-cost operational improvements” as a result, after investing only $139,000, which the company reclaimed after seven months.
MedImmune, is the first biotech research laboratory and clinical trial manufacturer to earn certification to SEP. “DOE’s Superior Energy Performance program has assisted our team in lowering our yearly operational costs and overall site carbon footprint, as well as helped us lead the way in environmental stewardship by developing and implementing world-class systems that make our Gaithersburg site a great place to work,” said Matt Bell, Chief Operating Officer, MedImmune. “The certification process also set up the infrastructure we need to maintain and expand those savings in the years ahead.”
