Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Potomac Watershed Study Center Tour
July 26, 2018
9:15 AM - 2:00PM
Join us as we tour the newly completed Morris & Gwendolyn Cafritz Potomac Watershed Study Center in Accokeek, Maryland
We will hear the story of how a project like this comes together. Starting with an Owner who values nature and all that it can provide. The Alice Ferguson Foundation was dedicated to building a facility that would work with its environment and that would provide a net positive effect. This led to the AFF finding a design team who had the ability to help them reach their goals. With the help of Re:Vision Architecture, InPosse, and Staengl Engineering, the Foundation already has one Living Building Challenge facility under their belt and are working on completing the design for a second building that will be net-zero. When you have a project like this commissioning is critical in ensuring the design has been properly implemented by the construction team and that the targeted energy efficiency will be able to be reached and consistently reached for years down the road. Lilker EMO worked with the design team and ownership to make sure that would happen on this project. After the panel discussion, there will be a tour of the Center, which at the time of completion was only the 9th building to reach Living Building Challenge Certification.
Karen has acted as a mentor to teachers and students alike in the fields of biology and ecology. Using her broad background and skills, Karen was project leader for a living shoreline restoration along the Potomac River and is currently Land Use/Facilities Manager at the Foundation, where she acts as staff liaison for a Living Building project at Hard Bargain Farm Environmental Center. She was a consultant to the
Office of Horticulture at The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and, prior to that, Project Coordinator and Field Station Manager for a large environmental assessment project at a 1,400 acre proposed nuclear power generating facility site. Karen has authored and illustrated a field guide to invasive plants of the mid-Atlantic region and has extensive photographic images used in publications for The Smithsonian Institution and DK Books.
